Going South
After 3 weeks we had to return our car ... and now ? The bus is to expensive, we didn't
find the opportunity to travel with someone - so we
hitchhike, it's only 730 miles.
Day 1:
We start in Palmer. Less than 10 minutes and someone takes us for a few miles, we arrive
at an Espresso Bar and Gas Station somewhere between Palmer and Glennallen. Again we don't
have to wait long, a truck driver gives us a ride. The truck is full of luggage and the driver
unusual silent. We arrive at Glennallen and the next stop is Tok. Two middleaged indian ladies
take us in a pickup truck. We squeeze on the flap-up seats, the ladies are very talkative.
We stop at a yard sale and after that we are invited to tea/coffee and tuna sandwiches.
Strengthened we go back to the street and it starts raining, and of course we have to wait
2,5 hours for the next lift. A family (two adults, two girls around 14 years old and two
boys, 10 and 11) takes us with them in their campervan. We have good fun with the boys David
and Matthiew, they feed us with Pretzels and we watch the Star Wars Episode 1 video. At the
canadian border the hitchhikers have to get off and show their passes and plane tickets. We
stay overnight in Canada, we build up our tent next to the campervan.
Day 2:
They takes us to Haines Junction. We don't have to wait there very long, although there
are no cars going to Haines. We start doubting but David comes anlong, a journalist on his way
to do a raft trip with some other people. The driver, Colby, who brought the people and
equipment, drives back to Haines. So we just have to wait a little bit. And that's how we
come to Haines.
After a short sightseeing tour through Haines, Colby drives us to the campsite. Later on he collects us again, because at the Klondike Saloon plays a live band. There are almost only local people
and they are curious. One dances wildly and we meet Tom. He collects us the next day and takes us to a potlatch party, a
party with many people and everyone brings something to eat, Tom is
housesitting and the party is next doors. And all the food we tasted was fantastic.
