Kenai Halbinsel - Gletscher, Kirchen, Meergetier
Also haben wir uns Richtung Kenai Peninsula aufgemacht und den ersten
Halt kurz vor Whittier eingelegt. Dort haben wir den ersten
Gletscher, den Byron Glacier von
Nahem gesehen und durften auch drauf rumlaufen. Im Visitor Center haben
wir uns mit Buechern eingedeckt, Pflanzen, Indianer,... Durch einen
einspurigen Eisenbahntunnel ging es dann nach Whittier, glaubten wir
zumindest, ausser ein paar verlassenen Haeusern und viel Hafen gab's
da aber nix, zumindest haben wir nichts anderes gefunden? Also wieder
am Tunnel anstellen und nix wie weiter. Bei einem kurzen Abstecher nach
Seward haben wir uns mit unserem ersten Lagerfeuer versucht,
das Brot hat denn aber mehr geraeuchert als geroestet geschmeckt - wir
ueben noch.
Und um endlich doch mal Elche und Baeren zu sehen, ging es ueber
Gravelroad weiter Richtung Westen. Wir haben uns zwischendurch auch
in die Wildnis auf den Kenai River Loop gewagt, wurden dann aber nicht
von Baeren sondern nur von einer Armada Moskitos gejagt. Wir waren
ziemlich schnell. Jedes Photo hat ca. 1 Liter Blut gekostet.
Zur Erholung gab es dann russische Kirchen und ein supertolles
Cafe in Kenai. Kaffee mit Haselnusssirup und Vanille-Mandel-Tee und
leckere Kekse und das war denn so nett, dass wir noch mehr
russische Kirchen angeschaut haben, diesmal
in Ninilchik - und wir gleich bis Homer weitergefahren und dort im
Salty Dawg Saloon gestrandet
sind, die BH's sind aber nicht von uns. Das Cafe hat uns sooo gut
gefallen, dass wir am naechsten Tag gleich nochmal vorbei MUSSTEN.
Und dann endlich unsere erste Tageswanderung bei Seward am
Exit Glacier. Wir sind so auf gut 1000 m
hochgewandert, vorbei an erstaunlich vielen
Blumen und ueber weite Schneefelder. Nach 4 Stunden waren wir
gaaaanz weit oben am Harding Icefield.
Runter ging's ein bisschen schneller und am Zeltplatz gab es zur
Belohnung Shrimps mit Knobibrot vom Grill. Und alle ausser uns hatten
Baeren auf der Wanderung gesehen, sogar eine Gruppe laut krakelender
14jaehriger Maedels. Vielleicht haben die Angst vor uns?
Da wir inzwischen schon Baumstaemme im Fluss mit schwimmenden Elchen
verwechselt haben und nicht vorhandene Karibuherden am Strassenrand
gesehen hatten, musste jetzt unbedingt ein Wildlife-Tag eingelegt werden.
Wir sind auf grosse Fahrt in den Golf von Alaska gegangen und endlich:
Wale, Delphine, Seeloewen, Puffins (das
sind ganz niedliche Voegel), Seeotter (die, die auf dem Ruecken
schwimmen und dabei die Fuesse in die Luft strecken) und der
riesengrosse Holgate Glacier.
Und jetzt sind wir zurueck in unserem
Base Camp in Palmer. Sieht nett aus, nicht?
Kenai Peninsula - Glaciers, Churches, Sea Animals
So we went to Kenai Peninsula and stopped for the first time not far
from Whittier. There we saw the first glacier, the Byron Glacier
from a short distance and could also walk on it. In the Visitor Center
we bought books about plants, Indians,... Through a one lane train
tunnel we drove to Whittier, that's what we thougt, but except a few
empty houses and a big harbour there was nothing. At least we didn't
find anything? So we queued again at the tunnel and rushed on. At a short
visit to Seward we tried to make our first camp fire, but finally the
bread tasted more smoked then grilled - we'll try again.
To see moose and bears, we took the gravel road to the west.
In between we risked to do the Kenai River Loop, but we weren't hunted
by bears but by an army of mosquitos. We were very fast. Every photo
was paid with 1/4 gallon of blood.
For recreation we visited Russian churches and a fantastic coffee
shop in Kenai. Coffee with hazelnut syrup and vanilla almond tea and
yami cookies and that was so neat that we visited more Russian
churches, this time in Ninilchik - and we drove on to Homer and
there we got lost in the Salty Dawg Saloon,
by the way these are not our bras. We liked the coffee shop that much
that we HAD to return the next day.
And then at last our first day hike near Seward at the
Exit Glacier. We hiked up to more than
3000 feet, passed unbelievable many flowers
and crossed large snow fields. After 4 hours we arrived at the very top at
the Harding Icefield. Down again we were
a bit faster and at the camp ground we made Shrimps with garlic bread
on the grill as a reward. And all except us had seen bears, even a
group of screaming 14 year old girls. Maybe they are afraid of us?
Meanwhile we started to mistake treetrunks in the river for
swimming moose and we saw non existing caribou flocks along the road,
we had to do a Wildlife day. We went on a cruise into the Gulf of Alaska
and finally: wales, dolphins, sea lions,
Puffins (that are very cute birds), sea otter (the ones swimming on
their back with their feet in the air) and the huge Holgate Glacier.
And now we are back in our base camp in Palmer. Doesn't
it look gorgeous?
